Project type: Custom attached aluminium sunroom extension
Location: Balwyn North, Melbourne, Victoria
Project size: 8m × 3.2m (approximately 25.6m²)

Project Background

This Balwyn North home had a long raised deck beside the main living area. Although the deck provided useful outdoor space, it remained exposed to Melbourne rain, wind and strong seasonal sunlight. The homeowners wanted to retain the existing connection to the garden while turning the 8m × 3.2m footprint into a bright, weather-protected room that could be used more consistently throughout the year.

Client Requirements

  • Enclose the full 8m-long deck without making the side of the home feel heavy or closed in.
  • Maintain clear garden views and bring generous daylight into the new room.
  • Provide convenient access from both the house and backyard path.
  • Include practical ventilation for warmer Melbourne days.
  • Use a modern dark frame that matches the home’s existing windows and exterior detailing.

Materials and Project Specifications

  • Overall footprint: 8m × 3.2m, approximately 25.6m².
  • Structural frame: dark powder-coated aluminium posts, beams and roof rafters.
  • Roof and wall enclosure: large clear framed panels selected to maximise daylight and outward views.
  • Ventilation: integrated operable awning window within the front elevation.
  • Floor and entry: existing raised timber-look deck retained, with wide matching steps to the garden.
  • Attachment: custom wall-connected layout designed around the existing house profile and available side setback.

Before Construction

Balwyn North raised backyard deck before 8m by 3.2m sunroom construction
Before: the open 8m × 3.2m deck was attractive but exposed to changing Melbourne weather.

During Installation

During installation: the dark aluminium structure and full-height transparent panels were fitted around the existing deck.

Our Solution

Furite Outdoor Living designed a slim attached enclosure that follows the full length of the house. Repeated vertical aluminium bays provide structural rhythm while preserving expansive views across the landscaped garden. The clear roof and wall panels keep the interior visually open, and the dark powder-coated finish coordinates with the home’s window frames.

The design retained the raised deck rather than replacing the established outdoor platform. Doors and an opening awning window were positioned to support everyday circulation and ventilation, creating a practical transition between the indoor living areas and the backyard.

Completed Result

  • Protected the space from rain and wind while retaining natural daylight.
  • Preserved wide views of the garden through full-height transparent panels.
  • Added controllable ventilation through an integrated opening window.
  • Created a cohesive extension that complements the home’s black-and-white exterior.
  • Provided flexible space for relaxing, dining and family entertaining.
