A 27m² outdoor enclosure gives this Black Rock home’s raised deck a more sheltered setting, with a dark aluminium frame, polycarbonate roofing and grey side screens. The design follows the existing rear elevation and keeps the deck, garden steps and side path central to the layout.
Project Background
The starting point was a broad, uncovered deck beside a two-storey home in Black Rock, Melbourne. Large rear windows looked across the timber-toned platform towards the garden, while steps along the front and right-hand edge connected the deck to the lawn and paved side path.
The deck already provided an outdoor area close to the house, but it had no overhead cover or screening along its exposed edges. The project introduced a custom 6m × 4.5m sunroom-style enclosure within this established setting.

Before: the open deck, existing rear windows and stepped garden access.
Client Requirements and Design Priorities
The project centred on making the existing deck a more sheltered outdoor space. Its layout addresses four practical priorities:
- Cover a 6m × 4.5m footprint without replacing the whole deck setting.
- Combine overhead protection with screening around the exposed sides.
- Coordinate the new structure with the home’s dark window frames and grey brickwork.
- Keep the surrounding steps, planting and paved side route outside the enclosure’s main footprint.
These priorities give the design a clear relationship to the existing house and garden, rather than treating the enclosure as an isolated addition.
Materials and Dimensions
| Project detail | Specification |
|---|---|
| Location | Black Rock, Melbourne, Victoria |
| Overall dimensions | 6m × 4.5m |
| Covered footprint | 27m² |
| Frame | Aluminium alloy, dark finish |
| Roof material | Polycarbonate sheets, as identified in the supplied material reference |
| Side treatment | Grey outdoor screens within dark perimeter framing |
| Existing setting | Raised deck beside the rear of the home |
The dark structural lines pick up the colour of the existing windows, while the grey screens sit comfortably against the brickwork. Polycarbonate forms the overhead material choice, with the screens adding a separate layer of shade and privacy around the sides.

Our Solution
The enclosure follows a rectangular footprint beside the rear wall. Its roof line sits beneath the upper-storey windows, and the front and side framing divide the broad elevations into manageable screen sections. Narrow transparent sections above the screens retain a lighter appearance along the upper edge.
The positioning is important: the enclosure uses the central deck area while leaving a visible deck margin at the front and along the stepped side. The existing garden path remains a distinct route beside the installation.
The result combines a roof and screened sides in one coordinated outdoor structure. For homeowners comparing similar layouts, our Melbourne sunroom product page explains the wider range of custom enclosure options. Roof materials and side treatments can be selected around the site and the way the space will be used.
Completed Result
The finished view shows the change from an exposed platform to a defined, screened outdoor room. The grey screens provide a visual boundary around the deck, and the dark frame connects the addition to the home’s existing architecture.
At 27m², the project creates a substantial sheltered zone beside the house while retaining the stepped transition to the garden. The before-and-after views show the key difference clearly: the deck’s position and surrounding landscape remain recognisable, with the new enclosure adding overhead cover and side screening.

After: the completed Black Rock enclosure, with the side screens lowered and the garden steps visible around the deck.
