Project type: Custom attached aluminium pergola / Melbourne outdoor living
Location: Camberwell, Melbourne, Victoria
Project size: 7m × 3.5m (approximately 24.5m²)

Project Background

This Camberwell residence had a generous 7m × 3.5m timber deck directly outside the main living area, but the uncovered platform offered little protection from Melbourne’s changing weather. The homeowners wanted a clean architectural pergola that would make the deck more useful without blocking daylight from the ground-floor windows or competing with the home’s contemporary façade.

Client Requirements

  • Create reliable shelter for outdoor dining and everyday family use.
  • Preserve natural light to the adjoining rooms and maintain the garden outlook.
  • Match the home’s dark window frames and modern exterior finishes.
  • Provide effective rainwater management within a slim structure.
  • Use durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for Melbourne conditions.

Materials and Project Specifications

  • Overall footprint: 7m × 3.5m, approximately 24.5m².
  • Frame: high-strength powder-coated aluminium posts, perimeter beams and roof rafters.
  • Roofing: clear polycarbonate roof panels selected to retain daylight while providing weather protection.
  • Drainage: integrated front gutter and downpipe system for controlled stormwater discharge.
  • Installation: custom wall-attached layout aligned with the existing timber deck and door openings.
  • Finish: dark architectural powder coat coordinated with the home’s external window frames.

Before Construction

The existing deck provided a strong connection to the landscaped backyard, but it remained exposed to rain and strong sun. The design needed to cover the full usable area while keeping posts clear of doors and circulation paths.

Installation and Material Selection

A lightweight aluminium structure was measured and fabricated for the exact 7m × 3.5m footprint. The wall-side beam, front posts and evenly spaced rafters create a balanced roof grid. Clear polycarbonate panels and integrated drainage protect the deck without making the lower level feel dark.

Our Solution

Furite Outdoor Living installed a slim, wall-connected aluminium pergola that follows the length of the deck. The dark frame visually connects with the house, while the transparent roofing maintains an open view of the sky. Structural members were positioned around the existing doors and windows, preserving convenient movement between the home, deck and garden.
