Backyard Leisure Sunroom in Cranbourne VIC

Project type: Backyard Leisure Sunroom / Melbourne Custom Build
Location: Cranbourne VIC 3977, Melbourne
Project size: 6m × 3.5m (21 m²)
Work scope: New freestanding aluminium and polycarbonate outdoor room

Project Background

This Cranbourne homeowner had a large lawn area behind the house but no sheltered outdoor space. The backyard could only be enjoyed in fine weather, leaving the family without a comfortable place for tea, meals or casual gatherings when Melbourne turned wet, windy or cold.

The client wanted to activate the unused lawn without extensive excavation or a high-cost full-glass extension. Budget, weather protection and a short installation period were the main priorities.

Client Requirements

  • Create an all-weather leisure and entertaining area on the unused backyard lawn.
  • Provide protection from rain, wind, insects and hail.
  • Maintain useful natural light while controlling the project cost.
  • Use durable, low-maintenance materials suited to Melbourne conditions.
  • Minimise disturbance to the existing garden and lawn.

Materials and Specifications

Aluminium frame and polycarbonate panel material specification for Cranbourne sunroom
Material specification: aluminium alloy framing and impact-resistant polycarbonate panels.
  • Frame: Black powder-coated aluminium framing with corrosion and UV resistance.
  • Wall and door panels: Large-format polycarbonate panels for soft daylight, privacy and impact resistance.
  • Roof: Weather-resistant polycarbonate roofing integrated with the aluminium structure.
  • Base: Raised timber support base designed to reduce major ground excavation.
  • Access and ventilation: Practical entry door and operable sections for airflow.
  • Dimensions: Custom manufactured after on-site measurement to fit the available Cranbourne backyard.

Our Solution

Furite Outdoor Living designed a lightweight enclosed leisure sunroom using a powder-coated aluminium frame and polycarbonate panels. Compared with a full toughened-glass enclosure, the selected panel system reduced structural weight and overall cost while providing strong impact resistance for changing Australian weather.

The raised base limited invasive ground works, while the enclosed walls and roof created a sheltered transition between the house and garden. Dark framing complements the existing window and fence colours and gives the new room a clean contemporary appearance.
