Doncaster / Curved Roof Sunroom

A curved roof addresses limited available height beside a Doncaster brick home. The sunroom combines upper glazing, insulated lower panels and an arched roof to create a brighter sense of space.

Project at a glance

Location Doncaster, Melbourne
Approximate drawing footprint 4450mm wide × 4530mm deep
Side height Around 2.4m
Drawing roof peak Around 2770mm
Lower walls Insulated panels
Design focus Headroom within a constrained roof connection

The site and the problem

A low roof connection risked making the proposed sunroom feel compressed. The owner wanted to turn an open concrete patio into a usable enclosure without a heavy, low-ceiling feeling.

What the client needed

  • Respond to the limited side height.
  • Retain light through the roof and upper panels.
  • Add privacy at the lower walls.

Design and installation approach

The arched roof rises above the approximately 2.4m side height. The supplied drawing shows a peak around 2770mm, increasing central headroom within the proposed footprint.

Upper glazing admits light while insulated lower panels reduce direct visibility into the room. The contrast between the solid lower section and transparent upper section is central to the design.

The result

The completed sunroom adds an enclosed space beside the house with a visibly raised central roof. The combination of lower panels and upper glazing balances privacy and daylight.

Questions about this project

Why was a curved roof chosen?

The low available side height made central headroom a key design concern. The arch lifts the centre of the roof.

Where do the dimensions come from?

The approximate footprint and roof-peak dimensions are recorded in the project’s design drawing.
