Kew / Aluminium Pergola

A covered deck should feel like a natural extension of the rooms beside it. This 6m × 3.53m pergola in Kew, Melbourne pairs a light-coloured aluminium frame with light-transmitting polycarbonate roofing above an existing timber deck, creating 21.18m² of overhead coverage.

Project background: an exposed deck beside two living areas

The original outdoor area sits within a corner of a two-storey home, with sliding doors opening onto the deck from adjoining rooms. Dark brickwork, white upper-storey cladding and black window frames give the house a crisp, contemporary appearance. The deck already provided a generous outdoor surface, but the space in front of the doors was open to the sky.

Customer requirements

The project brief centred on covering a 6m-wide area with a 3.53m projection while keeping the deck connected to the house. The design needed to retain daylight around the glazed doors, leave the sides open for circulation and suit the home’s contrasting exterior finishes.

  • Provide overhead rain protection for everyday use of the deck.
  • Keep the outlook open from the adjoining indoor spaces.
  • Fit the roof and supporting frame around the existing building layout.
  • Use a light frame colour that relates to the white cladding above.

The solution: overhead cover with an open outlook

The pergola follows the rectangular deck area and brings a simple roof line across the outdoor space. Its light-coloured beams and posts complement the upper-storey cladding, while the regular roof framing sits comfortably alongside the home’s straight window and brickwork lines.

Polycarbonate roofing allows light to pass through above the deck. This is particularly relevant here because the covered space sits directly outside large glazed doors: the aim is to add shelter while maintaining a bright connection between indoors and outdoors.

The sloping roof and front roof-edge gutter profile form part of the rainwater-management arrangement. The sides remain open, so wind-driven rain can still reach the deck. Roof coverage should be considered alongside the property’s drainage and exposure, rather than described as a fully weatherproof enclosure.

Completed result

The completed pergola defines a sheltered outdoor zone above the existing deck without enclosing the garden outlook. The light frame provides a visual connection to the house, and the transparent roof preserves views upward and daylight around the doors. The 6m × 3.53m footprint gives the household a covered area that can be arranged for seating, dining or everyday outdoor use.
