Kew / Arched Sunroom Rebuild

An ageing pergola and damaged deck in Kew were removed and rebuilt as an arched sunroom. The project combines a taller aluminium roof structure, grey polycarbonate roofing, a new WPC deck and clear enclosure panels.

Project at a glance

Location Kew, Melbourne
Decking Solid WPC boards
Deck support Aluminium joists at 400mm spacing
Support detail 1mm rubber strips
Roof Medium-grey polycarbonate
Openings Toughened-glass doors and windows
Recorded heights Earlier eave about 2.4m; new side edge about 2.8m; peak over 3m

The site and the problem

The old roof leaked and the decking was peeling, fading and developing wide gaps. The homeowner chose a complete rebuild rather than continuing to patch the existing structure.

Before: the old pergola and decking were removed so the area could be rebuilt properly.

What the client needed

  • Replace the worn deck and leaking pergola.
  • Increase the sense of headroom.
  • Retain garden views while adding side enclosure.

Design and installation approach

The replacement deck uses solid WPC boards on aluminium joists. Rubber strips form part of the support detail to reduce contact vibration.

An arched aluminium frame raises the roof above the earlier eave level. Grey polycarbonate panels address glare, while clear sides and toughened-glass openings retain views. The project record also describes roof sealing and water testing at completion.

The result

The rebuilt area has a new deck, a taller curved roof and an enclosed perimeter. The change addresses the deteriorated surfaces and low roof feeling of the former pergola.
