Knox / Curved Aluminium Awning

A 5m × 2m curved aluminium awning adds overhead cover to a narrow townhouse courtyard in Knox. The design focuses on the sliding-door threshold, a damp deck and the need to retain daylight between three surrounding walls.

The site and the problem

Wind-driven rain reached the deck and doorway in the three-sided courtyard. The homeowner wanted better shelter without making the small outdoor area feel darker or more enclosed.

Before: a three-sided walled courtyard where wind-driven rain regularly entered the deck and doorway area.

What the client needed

  • Cover the area above the sliding doors.
  • Fit the narrow courtyard footprint.
  • Retain daylight and manage roof runoff.

Design and installation approach

The curved roof extends over the doorway and deck, with light-transmitting polycarbonate panels above an aluminium frame. Its proportions respond to the courtyard rather than using a deep, heavy-looking roof.

The roof profile and drainage system work together to move collected water away. The open edge remains exposed to weather, so roof cover is not a guarantee against all wind-driven rain.

The result

The courtyard has a defined covered area beside the sliding doors. The transparent roof preserves the bright outlook while improving overhead protection for the deck.

Questions about this project

How large is this Knox awning?

The recorded dimensions are 5m wide by 2m deep.

Why retain a light-transmitting roof in this courtyard?

Three surrounding walls already limit the outlook. Polycarbonate roofing adds cover while allowing daylight into the deck and doorway area.
