Melbourne / Multi-Bay Steel Carport

A row of commercial parking bays in Melbourne needed overhead shelter without posts obstructing the vehicle entry side. Furite installed a repeating curved cantilever steel frame with a light-coloured tensioned membrane roof.

Project at a glance

Setting Commercial car park, Melbourne
Frame Q235 carbon structural steel
Finish White anti-corrosion coating
Roof Light-coloured tensioned membrane
Layout Multiple bays with cantilever beams

The site and the problem

The parking layout required continuous cover and practical access around parked vehicles. A roof supported by columns on both sides would have introduced more obstacles at the entry to each bay.

What the client needed

  • Cover the parking row while keeping the vehicle approach open.
  • Provide an outdoor steel structure with a coordinated white finish.
  • Plan the roof supports around the existing bay layout.

Design and installation approach

Curved steel beams extend from supports along one side of the parking area. Transverse members connect the repeating frames and provide support for the membrane roof.

The project photographs record the exposed steelwork, the membrane being lifted into place and the completed canopy in use. The cantilever arrangement is central to preserving access along the open side.

The result

The finished canopy provides continuous overhead cover across several parking bays. Its white frame and roof create a consistent appearance while leaving the vehicle approach open.

Questions about this project

Why use cantilever frames for these parking bays?

Supporting the roof from one side reduces columns along the vehicle entry side. The arrangement still needs to suit the bay widths, footings and site-specific structural design.
