Project type: Polycarbonate pergola with weather screens / cost-effective sunroom alternative
Location: Mount Waverley, Melbourne, Victoria
Project size: 7m × 3.6m (approximately 25.2m²)
Project Background
This contemporary Mount Waverley home had a paved outdoor area opening directly from the main living spaces. Although the courtyard had good access and natural light, it offered no reliable protection from strong afternoon sun, wind-driven rain or insects. The owners wanted a practical outdoor room that could be used more often without the cost and construction involved in a conventional fully glazed extension.
Client Requirements
- Cover the full 7m × 3.6m outdoor footprint while keeping the connection to the house comfortable and convenient.
- Create shade and rain protection without making the adjoining rooms feel dark.
- Add flexible side protection for wind, insects, dust and privacy.
- Match the home’s black window frames, warm timber cladding and modern architecture.
- Deliver a lower-cost, low-maintenance alternative to a permanent glass sunroom.
Materials and Specifications
- Overall size: 7m × 3.6m, approximately 25.2m².
- Structure: high-strength powder-coated aluminium posts, perimeter beams and roof framing.
- Roofing: light-transmitting polycarbonate panels selected for weather protection and natural daylight.
- Side enclosure: integrated outdoor weather screens that can be lowered for protection or opened when ventilation is preferred.
- Drainage: coordinated gutter and downpipe arrangement for controlled rainwater discharge.
- Finish: dark architectural powder coat designed to complement the existing exterior joinery.
Before Installation

The original paved area was attractive but exposed. Careful measurement was required so the new structure could sit neatly against the existing façade, preserve access through the doors and avoid visually competing with the two-storey architecture.
Weather Screen Features

Our Solution
Furite Outdoor Living designed a custom wall-connected aluminium pergola across the complete 7m × 3.6m area. The polycarbonate roof admits daylight while providing dependable overhead shelter. Dark retractable weather screens were integrated between the structural posts, allowing the family to adjust the enclosure according to the season and conditions.
With the screens lowered, the area gains privacy and improved protection from insects, glare, wind and light rain. When conditions are mild, the screens can be opened to restore airflow and the garden outlook. This flexibility creates much of the comfort of an enclosed sunroom while avoiding the weight, cost and permanent appearance of full-height glass walls.
Completed Result

- Created approximately 25.2m² of adaptable, weather-protected outdoor living space.
- Improved protection from sun, insects, wind, rain and dust.
- Preserved natural light through the polycarbonate roofing system.
- Matched the home with a clean dark frame and discreet integrated screens.
- Delivered a cost-effective sunroom alternative with flexible ventilation and privacy.
