Project location: Cranbourne, Melbourne, VIC
Project size: 6m × 2.7m
This Cranbourne backyard renovation replaced an ageing timber pergola with a custom aluminium patio roof. The old structure had become unreliable after years of exposure to Melbourne weather: water entered during rain, the opaque roof reduced daylight, and the internal clearance of approximately 2.2–2.5 metres made the patio feel dark and confined.
Project Background
The existing pergola covered a useful outdoor area beside the house, but its deteriorating timber frame and leaking roof limited how often the family could use the space. Repairing isolated sections would not have addressed the underlying problems, so the owners chose a complete timber pergola replacement in Cranbourne.
Client Requirements
- Remove the old leaking timber pergola and create reliable rain protection.
- Bring more natural light into the covered patio.
- Improve the usable clearance and sense of space.
- Avoid loading or drilling into the existing tiled house roof.
- Use a durable, low-maintenance structure for long-term outdoor use.
Materials and Specifications
- Overall size: 6m × 2.7m
- Frame: Powder-coated aluminium patio roof structure
- Support: 60 × 60 aluminium posts
- Foundations: Dedicated reinforced concrete footings for the support posts
- Roof projection: 300mm overhang
- Roofing: Light-transmitting polycarbonate roof panels
- Load path: Structural loads transferred through the posts into the ground footings, without placing load on the existing roof tiles
Our Solution
After measuring the existing 6m × 2.7m patio, our team removed the weather-damaged timber structure and prepared the site for a new aluminium system. Independent concrete footings were installed to support the 60 × 60 posts. This created a clear load path to the ground and allowed the new patio roof to extend over the house roof edge without relying on the existing tiles for structural support.
The 300mm overhang was detailed to improve weather coverage at the junction, while the new polycarbonate panels increased daylight across the patio. The aluminium frame was arranged to provide adequate support across the long, narrow footprint and to create a cleaner, more open appearance.

Completed Result
The finished aluminium patio roof has removed the key problems caused by the old pergola. The covered area is brighter, the revised clearance feels more comfortable, and the new roof provides dependable protection during wet weather. Powder-coated aluminium also avoids the rot and frequent repainting associated with ageing timber.
The independent footing design protects the existing house roof from structural loading while providing a stable support system for the new 6m × 2.7m cover. The family now has a practical all-weather space for relaxing and entertaining.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you build a pergola without drilling into my house roof in Cranbourne?
Yes, where the site and design allow it. This project used independent load-bearing posts and concrete footings, so the new roof did not place structural load on the existing roof tiles. Every property must be measured and assessed individually.
Why replace an old timber pergola with aluminium?
Powder-coated aluminium does not rot and generally requires less maintenance than exposed timber. A well-designed aluminium patio roof can also improve daylight, drainage and weather protection.
Do you offer free quotes for pergola replacement in Cranbourne?
Yes. We provide free onsite measurement and a custom quotation for pergola and patio roof projects in Cranbourne and surrounding Melbourne suburbs.
Does a pergola replacement require approval?
Approval requirements vary according to the property, dimensions and proposed structure. A registered building surveyor or the relevant authority should confirm the requirements for each site before construction.
