Melbourne, Victoria · Industrial parking area · Seven EV charging bays

A 24m-long PVDF membrane carport brings continuous overhead shelter to a row of seven EV charging bays. With a 6m depth and 3.2m eaves height, the structure covers approximately 144m² in plan while retaining an open-sided parking layout.

Project Background

The industrial site’s exposed parking area offered little overhead shelter for charging vehicles or people using the equipment. The brief was to add a dedicated canopy that would fit the factory setting and make the charging row more comfortable to use in sun and rain.

Client Requirements

  • Provide continuous cover along seven charging bays.
  • Keep vehicle access, charging controls and cable handling areas usable.
  • Use a durable outdoor steel frame and a white membrane roof.
  • Coordinate the structure with the industrial buildings and parking layout.
  • Plan column locations and footings around site conditions.

Design and Installation Solution

Fit the canopy to everyday charging use

The continuous roof follows the charging row. The support layout leaves the equipment approachable and preserves the open character of the car park. Charger positioning and cable routes are considered alongside vehicle movement rather than treated as an afterthought.

Combine a steel frame with a tensioned PVDF membrane

The galvanised frame provides the supporting structure, with corrosion protection suited to an outdoor installation. The white PVDF membrane forms a curved overhead cover. Membrane tension, roof geometry and drainage detailing work together to manage rainwater; the foundations and connections need to match the engineered design for the site.

Provide shelter with practical limits

The roof shades the covered parking area and reduces direct overhead rain exposure. Open sides maintain visibility and airflow but allow wind-driven weather to enter. The canopy supplements the charging equipment’s own weather protection; it does not replace it.

Project Outcome

The charging area now has a defined, sheltered row beneath a white membrane roof. Seven bays share the same overhead structure, giving the industrial parking area a consistent appearance while retaining access to the chargers and surrounding vehicle routes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much area does this seven-bay canopy cover?

The canopy measures 24m long by 6m deep, giving approximately 144 square metres of nominal plan coverage. Its eaves height is 3.2m.

What membrane is used on this project?

The specified roof material is white PVDF membrane, supported by hot-dip galvanised tubular steel framing. Product-specific performance should be checked against the supplied material documentation.

Does a canopy replace the charger’s weather protection?

No. The canopy provides overhead shade and rain shelter, but its open sides remain exposed to wind-driven weather. Charging equipment still needs suitable weather protection and installation.
